The spirituality of marketing

I get A LOT of feedback and commentary about the marketing activities on my business…A LOT.

“Wow, I see you everywhere”
“Gosh I’ve never known someone to put themselves out there like that”
“Can you show me how”
“You’re always on my Facebook feed”
“I see your posters everywhere”
“Gee you’re doing a lot”

That kind of thing. A lot of people have an opinion. I find that fascinating, and I find the responses to the way I market myself even more fascinating.

Possibly one of the scariest things I've done, publish this photo. This photo shoot took place as part  of my Embodied workshop and e-course launching in June this year. Yes, there are plenty of images in the media of women in their smalls, but until you go through the process yourself you’ll never have any idea what it takes and what challenges you face in being FULLY seen. THAT is where the growth is. Same thing with business, go through your own small business and you are fast tracked to self realisation, and growth.

I am the face of my business. My business and my dharma are inextricably linked. When I am marketing my offering, I am putting into the world my essence and my offering which is based on my lifetimes of lessons, why would I want to hide that? I actually see the marketing of my business as 100% linked to essence of what I teach and what I do. Yeah of course, thats a no brainer. But I mean really, I am in my marketing leading by example to inspire others to put themselves out there too, time and time again. Marketing is intention based and the basic law of attractions are at wondrous play in the art of business. The art of business is one of the most incredible forms of spiritual development I know, if you allow it to be, and you have the intention for it to be.

To put yourself and your image and all that you stand for out into the world requires a fierce bravery. To be seen. To be fully seen, and highly likely to be judged. THAT is what stops many people, the fear, “what will people think”. Here’s what I’ve come to learn. It simply doesn’t matter! Because everyone will have an opinion, and respectfully, none of them matter. If you let that thought hold you back in the world for fear of judgement, you would never do anything! Yes I meet resistance and ego mind pulls me back, I see it, I hear it and I call it. Hello fear, thanks for showing up, I’m fine all the same, I’m going to stay in my flow.

To put your offerings into the world, when you may still have the self doubt, or you know you and what you are “selling” may not be perfect (or at least your standard of perfection). To, day after day practice and stay aligned to the vision of your business, to commit to all that you do and stand for, day in day out. There’s a saying in the contemporary yoga world, in fact it’s a hashtag #yogaeverydamnday, well to that I say this #marketingeverydamnday. If you are trying to build a brand and a platform to shine your light as far and wide as you can, you have to market everyday. Because showing up to your business every day energetically sets strong vibrations in tow, you are in it, you are present, and when someone wants to find you and your magic, they know where.

There are differing school of thought around this, and one of them is “it’s a sell out”. That somehow a spiritual teacher shouldn’t have to advertise, and people will just find you, they might. But they might not, and chances are they won’t because there is a sea of messages out there and your will get lost.

Marketing your business does not make you less spiritual, or egotistical, or take away any of your credibility. In my business mentoring client 1:1’s I see the resistance to marketing often direct correlation to deep seeded self worth beliefs. The comparison beast rears it’s head, and incredibly talented people swim in oceans of self doubt and feel like giving up when they see all that is out there in the market. Yes there is a lot out there, but it’s not YOU.

It wasn’t always so easy to me and my work out into the world. I remember very clearly how much fear was in me when I first opened my yoga studio and finally put myself into the world fair and square as yoga teacher. I worked through LAYERS of fear, self doubt, and The same thing with some of my newer offerings. I get the fear every time I expand myself, and put out my new offerings to the world. I see it, I call it, and I move forward to my intention, in the flow of my dharma, one Facebook post at a time!

Are you in business and procrastinating about any of the following, designing a logo, building a website, arranging the photoshoot, posting to Facebook, so on and so on. If the answer is yes, respect your process and where you are with it. But I’m gonna take a little guess, that maybe it’s fear and not good enough at play…Mixed in with a little, holy shit this could work, and then who will I really be when I don’t have any resistance. That’s where it get’s seriously juicy. Business is one of the most incredible tools for self development and self realisation to our birthright of abundance and joy, but you must go towards it and keep flowing and allow yourself to be SEEN.
